Put an End to Phobias with a Jolt of Hypnotherapy

One of the most common reasons that people decide to try hypnotherapy is to rid themselves of a phobia. Phobias are disorders that cause a tremendous amount of anxiety and emotional stress on an individual. A fear becomes a phobia when it begins to interfere with the way a person lives their life. The DSM-IV breaks phobias down into three groups- simple phobias, social phobias and agoraphobia (fear of being alone or being in a public place and not being able to break away).

Some of the most common phobias include a fear of spiders, a fear of flying and a fear of heights. Hypnotherapy techniques have been shown to be extremely beneficial at helping individuals to learn new patterns of behaviour and to help them remain calm when faced with the phobia as opposed to panicking.

One of the ways that hypnotherapy helps to rid a person of his or her phobia is that it teaches both relaxation, as well as visualization techniques that serve to desensitize the person from that which scares them. Often this is a gradual process and the hypnotherapist will need to work with the person for a variety of sessions.

Hypnotherapy is instrumental in teaching new habits that help in coping with the phobia. Hypnotherapy seeks to allow a person to become more calm, composed and relaxed, not only while they are undergoing a session but also once they leave the hypnotist’s office and go out into the real world.

It is important for hypnotherapy to undercover the root of the phobia and then to work with the understanding and acceptance of it. That knowledge can then be used to show the patient why the phobia might once have served a beneficial purpose but no longer has a useful role to play. Hypnosis helps to kick start the subconscious mind to rid itself of fears that are irrational and unnecessary. The patient must be clearly shown that the phobia has become a behaviour pattern that must be done away with because it has become passé.

Hypnotherapy is used to help boast an individual’s level of self-confidence, as many people who suffer from a phobia need to feel stronger and more empowered. Hypnotherapy can be extremely successful in curing phobias when it combines the elements of relaxation, stress management and confidence building.

Phobias are twice as common in females as they are in males. The ratio is 2:1 with social phobias comprising the largest group of phobias. Phobias can begin at any age and are generally caused by severe stress, the fear of fear, a past trauma, the gradual building of a series of negative experiences or a fear that has come from someone else.

It is very common for people to suffer from more than one phobia. In Australia an estimated 9% of individuals will experience a phobia in their lifetime.

Other common types of anxiety related disorders that can be treated with hypnotherapy include generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
